BMA employs ‘tho sinks’ to drain flood water

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has employed several ‘tho sinks’, a Thai-style sink drainage pipe or sink trap, which are installed on the backs of pick-up trucks to drain flood water from areas, such as Rom Klao and Lat Krabang in eastern Bangkok, into Prawet Buri Rom canal.

Such water suction pumps are widely used in shrimp and fish farms. They were used to pump water out of Tham Luang cave in Chiang Rai in 2018 during the mission to rescue 12 footballers and their coach trapped inside the flooded cave.

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said today that a number of roads have reopened to normal traffic, except some sideroads which are still inundated. He added that city officials are accelerating the drainage of water from the eastern region, particularly Lat Krabang and Rom Klao.

In the densely populated Rom Klao housing estate, in Lat Krabang district, he said several ‘tho sinks’ have been employed to drain the floodwater and a barrier has been built to prevent from it flowing back to the housing estate.

The situation in several housing estates in Ramkhamhaeng, Saphan Sung, Bang Kapi, Nawamin Road and Lat Phrao area has improved, but the governor said the major task today is to speed up the draining of water from Prawet Buri Rom Canal to create more space for water from the Lat Krabang area and eastern Bangkok.
