Thailand won one silver and three bronze medals on Thursday as competition continued at the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
Navin Pinthasute won silver in the men’s individual poomsae event in taekwondo, while Thitaree Kaew-olanwasu took bronze in the women’s individual poomsae.
Thitaree scored 9.0400 points to secure the bronze medal, while the gold went to a South Korean athlete and the silver to a Filipino.
Piyanat Kerdsuk also won bronze in the men’s canoe slalom, completing the final in 121.68 seconds. The medal was Thailand’s first Asian Games medal in canoe slalom since the event was introduced to the Games in 2010. The gold went to China and the silver to Chinese Taipei.
Miyu Suzuki won another bronze for Thailand in the women’s under-48kg jiu-jitsu event.
The results took Thailand’s medal tally to 12 gold, 11 silver and 15 bronze by Thursday evening.
Former world champion Ratchanok Intanon’s Asian Games campaign ended in the badminton women’s singles quarter-finals, where she lost 21-8, 21-9 to world’s number one An Se-young of South Korea on September 27.
Ratchanok later attracted attention on social media after posting on X on Thursday that: “Foreigners are prouder of me than people in my own country.” Her post sparked a debate about the treatment of Thai athletes on social media, with many fans responding with messages of support.
In volleyball, Thailand’s men’s team bowed out in the quarter-finals, after losing 3-0 to China, 23-25, 23-25 and 19-25.
Thailand’s women’s beach volleyball pairing of Taravadee Naraphornrapat and Worapeerachayakorn Kongphopsarutawadee advanced to the final after beating the Philippines 2-0, 23-21, 21-18.
In the men’s beach volleyball semi-final, Thailand’s Poravid Taovato and Pithak Tipjan lost 2-0 to Qatar, 21-23, 12-21, leaving them to play for the bronze medal.
The Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games run until October 4.
