Madam Pang: FIFA promotion puts Thai football on path to greatness

A Thai power player has arrived on football’s biggest stage to help shape the sport’s global development. Football Association of Thailand (FA Thailand) president Nualphan Lamsam, better known as Madam Pang, has been handpicked by FIFA president Gianni Infantino to chair the FIFA Development Committee until 2029.

In a historic breakthrough, she becomes the first woman ever to hold the powerful position — a move that catapults both her and Thailand into football’s global spotlight.

 Steering global strategy

The Development Committee is no ordinary seat at FIFA’s table. It is the heartbeat of worldwide football development strategy, setting the direction for all 211 member associations.

Nualphan succeeds Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa, former Asian Football Confederation president, a name that underscores the weight of the position.

With the FA Thailand chief stepping into the role, Thailand now has something it has never had before: a direct voice in shaping global football policy.

For Thai football, the implications are huge. Nualphan’s appointment gives Thailand representation at the very top, a place where strategies and billion-dollar funding decisions are made.

In practical terms, it gives the country a stronger chance of securing funding for infrastructure, youth development, and grassroots programmes directly from FIFA.

No longer a mere recipient of aid, Thailand now has a say in how that aid is designed and delivered, potentially transforming how football grows in the kingdom over the next decade.

 Making history

Nualphan’s elevation follows impressive progress in the domestic game. Earlier this year, she travelled to Miami to receive the FIFA Forward Award at the FIFA Executive Football Summit 2025, recognition for Thailand’s exemplary use of FIFA funds to strengthen football nationwide.

Under her presidency, the FA Thailand has turned global support into concrete progress, with better facilities, broader access for youngsters, and greater professionalism at every level.

But it wasn’t her only international win. In 2024, the year she rewrote history as Asia’s first woman to lead a national football association, Thailand also bagged the Diamond Award for Best Football Association of the Year at the AFC Annual Awards in Seoul.

The accolade confirmed that Thai football, under Madam Pang’s leadership, was firmly back on track. Her ability to back vision with action caught the eye not only of domestic fans but also global football’s most powerful figure, Infantino.

Her new role places Thailand closer than ever to FIFA’s central decision-making process. It is here that programmes to uplift football in developing nations are designed — programmes that build FIFA-standard training facilities, support grassroots coaching, and invest in youth academies.

Having a Thai spearheading this process is a game-changer, making it more likely that projects benefitting Thailand will be prioritised. It allows the country to push for funding more effectively. Thailand can shape its football destiny with more leverage than ever before.

Beyond the immediate benefits, the ripple effect could be even greater. When FIFA invests in a country’s football infrastructure, local investment tends to follow.

Government agencies, private companies, and local organisations are far more likely to contribute when they see global support in place. Nualphan’s FIFA role is likely to become the catalyst for new partnerships, larger budgets, and bolder projects to elevate Thai football.

The timing of this appointment is also significant for her personally. In recent months, speculation had grown that she was preparing to enter politics.

But this global assignment redirects that spotlight back to where her true passion lies — football. It allows her to focus on developing the game directly rather than navigating the treacherous territory of politics.

For football fans across the country, that’s exactly where they want to see her: championing the sport on the biggest stage in the world.

Reigniting fans' hopes

Nualphan has also put Thailand back on course to becoming a global footballing power, rekindling fans’ hope of seeing their team make a long-awaited debut at the World Cup.

Her leap from domestic governance to global development reflects how far the game in the country has come. For years, Thailand has had ambition. Now, it has someone at the table where ambition is turned into action.

In the end, this is more than a personal milestone — it’s a turning point for Thai football. With Nualphan on the FIFA Development Committee, Thailand opens a new chapter, one where it no longer just dreams of progress but helps shape it. The next four years will determine how far Thai football can go.

For a nation that loves the game so deeply, this moment feels like the beginning of something bigger.
