The Chinese Embassy in Bangkok has issued a warning to Chinese tourists visiting Thailand after a viral video clip surfaced online showing a Chinese tour guide threatening his clients to buy products from selected shops, or else they would not be allowed to board the tour bus.
According to the embassy’s Facebook page, it responded by contacting the Thai Tourist Police and the Tourism Authority of Thailand to investigate the matter.
The embassy was informed that the tour guide in question was a Chinese national operating without a valid Thai tour guide license.
The guide allegedly pressured Chinese tourists into making purchases and collected commissions from affiliated shops.
Investigations revealed that the guide was working in cooperation with a local tour company, which is now under official scrutiny. Legal action is currently underway against those responsible.
As a result, the Chinese Embassy warned its citizens traveling in Thailand to avoid “low-cost tour packages,” which often come with hidden risks.
Tourists are strongly advised to book with reputable, licensed outbound travel agencies that provide transparent and legally binding service agreements.
The embassy also emphasized that, under Thai law, foreign nationals are strictly prohibited from working as tour guides in the country.
Tourists encountering any disputes are urged to exercise caution, preserve evidence, and seek assistance immediately by contacting the Thai Tourist Police at 1155 or the Chinese consular protection hotline in Thailand at +66 2-245-7010.
