A Thai Marine was injured when he accidentally stepped on a landmine while conducting mine clearance at the border in Ban Nong Ree, Muang district of the eastern province of Trat on Sunday morning.
The injured Marine, Petty Officer First Class (PO1) Thoedpong Pommara of the engineering corps of the Marine Division, was immediately rushed to hospital.
The Royal Thai Navy (RTN) says that the latest landmine explosion is a clear indication that Cambodia continues to use anti-personnel landmines to injure Thai troops, in violation of the Ottawa Convention.
Thai Marines recently regained control of Ban Nong Ree after driving Cambodian force out during fierce fighting.
Meanwhile, RTN Spokesman Rear Admiral Parach Rattanachaipan claimed today that a private Cambodian company has voluntarily dismantled a seawall, as he dismissed a report that the Thai Navy had threatened to bomb a bridge in Cambodia if the seawall is not removed.
The seawall, which was built by Cambodia to reduce the impact of waves, has been alleged by the Thai side to be causing coastal erosion and adversely affecting the ecological system of the Thai coastline in Trat province.
Rear Admiral Parach also claimed that the RTN had complained the seawall via the Regional Border Committee several times before, but without success.
