The Thai Army has established a new outpost named “Inthuman Base” atop Phu Makua mountain in Si Sa Ket province to honour Sgt Jirayut Inthuman, who sacrificed his life in the line of duty during a clash with Cambodian forces in July while defending the nation’s sovereignty.
The newly built “Inthuman Base” serves as a lasting tribute to Sgt Jirayut, a member of a commando battalion who was killed during an operation in the border area.
On the morning of July 25, an assault company was ordered to seize the Phu Makua summit.
Sgt Jirayut, who served as a demolition sergeant in the first commando platoon, was tasked with destroying communication towers, a bridge, and a cable car system.
During the exchange of fire with Cambodian soldiers, he was fatally struck by enemy bullets.
Jirayut was among 15 Thai soldiers killed during the five-day bloody clash with Cambodian forces, before both countries agreed to a ceasefire on July 28.
Fourteen civilians were killed and many others injured in the fighting, while hospitals, convenience stores, and schools near the border came under attack.
The Royal Thai Army said the name “Inthuman Base” will stand as an enduring symbol of honour and remembrance for a brave warrior who gave his life to secure Phu Makua.
Jirayut, who was posthumously promoted to the rank of Major, was born in Sing Buri province. He was the son of Lt Boonlert Inthuman and Somphit Inthuman and is survived by his wife and daughter.
