A renowned Indian actor, known in Thailand for his portrayal of Prince Siddhartha in popular religious television series, has issued a public apology to Thai fans following criticism of his recent visit to Cambodia.
“I sincerely apologise to all my Thai fans if my recent visit to Cambodia caused any hurt. Thailand is my second home and I hold this country in the deepest respect,” Gagan Malik wrote on his Facebook page.
The actor also announced that he has officially resigned from his role as Cambodia’s Tourism Goodwill Ambassador, a pro-bono position to which he was appointed earlier this year.
Malik explained that his decision to step down was made out of respect for Thailand and in light of recent tensions between the two countries.
“My decision is final and made with complete clarity. I have stepped away from all related responsibilities,” he stated.
He explained that the recent trip was his first time leading a group tour to Cambodia, which was followed by five days in Thailand. He stressed that there was no intent to cause any upset.
In Thailand, Malik is widely known for playing Prince Siddhartha in Sri Siddhartha Gautama and Lord Rama and Krishna in the television series Ramayan and Hanuman.
Beyond acting, he is actively involved in Buddhist cultural promotion, spiritual tours and temple projects, particularly in Thailand and Sri Lanka.
He also highlighted his deep and longstanding connection to Thailand, noting that he has spent the past decade working on projects to promote Buddhism in the country.
“I am also building a temple in India, inspired by Thai art, as a tribute to my love and respect for Thailand,” he added.
Malik concluded his statement by expressing deep gratitude for the Thai people’s support and pledged to be more mindful in the future.
He concluded with, “Thailand will always hold a very special place in my heart… I truly hope the Thai people will understand me better and I will continue to do my best to honour this beautiful country.”
