Thailand’s Second Region Army Commander Lt Gen Boonsin Padklang said today there are no clear signs yet that Cambodia will relocate its heavy weaponry from border areas, as agreed with Thailand at the recent General Border Committee (GBC) meeting.
Instead, he claimed that Cambodia has sent reinforcements to the border, adding that he doubts that the GBC agreement will be upheld by Cambodia. Meanwhile, the Regional Border Committee (RBC) is due to hold its regular meeting early next month.
The outspoken commander also said that, if Cambodia continues with its provocative acts, it would be pointless for the two countries to continue talking to resolve their border conflict.
He thanked Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul for giving the Thai military the authority to decide when, whether or which border checkpoints with Cambodia will be reopened and to press ahead with the building of border fence.
Meanwhile, Lt-Gen Amarit Boonsuya, commander of the First Army Region, said today that he will submit mine clearance and border management plans to the Cambodian delegation at a special three-day RBC meeting in Poipet, which begins this Wednesday.
In the meantime, the Chanthaburi-Trat Task Force has postponed the RBC meeting with their Cambodian counterparts, because it has to deal with arrangements for the reopening of some border checkpoints in Chanthaburi and Trat provinces.
