A Cambodian teen beauty contestant, who on the stage accused Thailand of opening fire on Cambodian troops and of unlawful detention of 18 Cambodian soldiers, was crowned Miss Teen Cambodia 2025 on Sunday.
Chouri Laorhours’s national title win, described by many supporters as “expected”, followed a night of standout performances and a bold speech that quickly drew national attention.
During the pageant’s debate segment, Chouri accused Thailand of violating a peace declaration in the aftermath of the deadly incident in Prey Chan village, where Cambodian civilians were reportedly injured and killed.
She also revisited the July 24 border clash, alleging that Thai troops had opened fire on Cambodian soldiers, causing casualties, damaging property and even damaging parts of the Preah Vihear Temple.
The 18-year-old went on to claim that 18 Cambodian soldiers were unlawfully detained by Thai forces after a ceasefire agreement, stating they have still not been freed.
Speaking “on behalf of all Cambodian people,” she called on Thailand to free the detained soldiers immediately, in accordance with international humanitarian law, and urged the international community to condemn Bangkok’s actions.
Her speech drew loud applause, especially when she thanked Prime Minister Hun Manet for what she described as his “commitment to peace” and his care for the Cambodian people.
Her road to the crown had not been without controversy though.
Ahead of the competition, she faced criticism from social media users, who accused her of repeatedly winning pageants because of her wealthy background.
She dismissed the claims, insisting her success stemmed from talent and dedication. “Those who think I win because I have money are wrong,” she wrote on social media.
“I always compete based on my ability. The pageant chooses contestants who truly have talent. Whether someone has resources or not, if they have more ability, they will win the crown with dignity.”
Many supporters echoed her sentiment, arguing that her beauty, skill and strong stage presence made her a clear favourite for the 2025 crown.
