Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said he has given the army the “greenlight” on how to respond to rising tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border.
“Those areas are within the jurisdiction of the Second Army Region which will make decisions based on defending the country’s sovereignty,” said Anutin on Thursday night.
The prime minister was responding to reports of brewing tensions on the Thai-Cambodian border.
The Second Army Region Operations Centre reported on Thursday that Cambodian troops had moved heavy weapons to a firing position opposite Kantharalak district in Thailand’s Si Sa Ket province on Wednesday.
The centre reported on its official Facebook page that the reinforcement is believed to be in preparation for possible military action.
“I have given (Second Army Region) the greenlight on how to respond,” Anutin said.
The prime minister said that the government is ready to provide all necessary support to the army. Anutin, who also doubles as interior minister, also said he plans to visit some of the border areas next week.
