Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said today that he does not need to be an official advisor to the prime minister because, as her father, she can always call him for advice.
He said that, about 23 years ago, he stood out front, with Paetongtarn standing behind him. Now she is at the front, he will take his place behind her.
Thaksin said he understands that, as prime minister, Paetongtarn carries a heavy burden, but she has the advantage of youth, at the age of 37, unlike him, who is already 75.
Describing Paetongtarn as a gentle and humble person, he said that the she will be able to seek support and cooperation from all sectors of Thai society to drive the economy and the country forward.
He denied having any role in the formation of the new government, saying that the matter rests with the prime minister. He also offered his assurance that Paetongtarn’s political career will not end like his.
The new cabinet, which is yet to be formed, will consist, predominantly, of former cabinet ministers in Srettha government, with some being removed. The seat allocation among the coalition parties will, however, remain 17 seats for Pheu Thai, eight seats for Bhumjaithai, four seats each for United Thai Nation and Palang Pracharath, one seat each for Chart Thai Pattana and Prachachart.
It is reported that Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira may lose his job and be replaced by his deputy, Julapun Amornvivat of Pheu Thai party, if a newcomer cannot be found.
Pheu Thai Secretary-General Sorawong Thienthong may be given a cabinet post, as will party-list MP Khattiya Sawatdiphol.
Industry Minister Pimpatra Wichaikul may be replaced by Akanat Promphan, secretary-general of the United Thai Nation party. Natural Resources and Environment Minister Patcharawat Wongsuwan of Palang Pracharath may be replaced by Santi Promphat.
