Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and several of her minsters will fly to Chiang Rai province on Friday to visit flood victims. The provincial governor has been instructed not to organise any reception event for her, because she does not want any resources diverted from helping the victims.
The prime minister held a special meeting with relevant ministers today, among them Defence Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsuthin, to discuss the flood situation in Chiang Rai and to map out urgent and post-flood measures to help the victims.
Describing the flooding as severe, she said that she would like to hear the true situation and problems “directly from the horse’s mouth”, so the government can respond to their needs appropriately.
During the meeting, the prime minister said she welcomes recommendations from all minsters, noting that this is a time for all parties to join forces to help those affected by the flooding and to restore their livelihoods.
She said that the first priority is to get people to safety. The government will take care of the other undertakings such as post-flood rehabilitation.
