Former Democrat party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva, who resigned from the party two years ago, is allowed, under the party’s rules, to run for the leadership again, following the resignation of Chalermchai Sri-on, said former party spokesman Ramate Rattanachaweng today.
Ramate explained that the Democrat party maintains an open policy, allowing all members, including former members rejoining the party, to stand for the positions of party leader or executive committee member.
He noted that once Abhisit, who resigned in December 2023, registers as a new member, he can immediately participate in the leadership election process, without requesting an exemption from party rules, as he has previously held significant positions within the party.
Ramate said it is true that Article 30 of the party’s regulations states that members eligible for election as executive committee members must be at least 20 years old and have been party members continuously for at least two years.
There are exceptions, though, for those who have served as executive committee members, branch committee members, party MPs, ministers under the party, or local council/executive candidates endorsed by the party.
Ramate made the remarks after Chalermchai resigned from the party, effective today, citing health reasons.
According to Ramate, senior party figures, including former party leader and former prime minister Chuan Leekpai, agree that Abhisit is the most suitable candidate for the revitalisation of the party and to lead it into the future.
Meanwhile, Democrat party spokesperson, Jenjira Rattanapien, said that a general meeting will be held within 60 days to elect a new executive committee.
