Thai sports fans are in for a big treat after authorities announced that the public will be given the opportunity to attend next month’s 33rd SEA Games free of charge, to mark the occasion of Thailand hosting the biennial sporting event for the first time in 18 years.
The Kingdom last hosted Southeast Asia’s most prestigious multi-sport tournament in 2007. This year, the Games will take place from December 9–20 across Bangkok, Chon Buri, and Songkhla.
Tourism and Sports Minister Atthakorn Sirilatthayakorn revealed, after chairing a meeting of the 33rd SEA Games Organising Committee last week, that registration for free admission will soon open to the public.
“The Tourism and Sports Ministry and the Sports Authority of Thailand have a joint policy to allow local sports fans to register for free entry during the SEA Games competition. It’s a gift to the public to celebrate Thailand hosting the Games again after 18 years,” said Atthakorn.
Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) governor Gongsak Yodmani assured that people from all walks of life will have equal access to the free-entry opportunity.
“The registration system will include strict screening measures to ensure maximum safety. There will also be quotas for school and university students, people with disabilities, and underprivileged groups — all will be able to attend competitions at any venue,” said Gongsak.
“For popular sports like volleyball and football, there will be viewing zones with giant screens outside the stadiums so that those who miss out on registration can still enjoy the atmosphere,” he added.
