Immigration police in Chiang Mai province have arrested a Briton for alleged possession of various controlled substances, including ten bags of cocaine, with intent to sell.
The suspect, identified only as 'Daniel,' was allegedly in partnership with a Thai national in operating a cannabis shop in the Chang Moi area of downtown Chiang Mai and had been under police surveillance for some time for selling illegal narcotics to foreign tourists.
According to police, they found 21.61g of methamphetamine tablets, ten ecstasy (MDMA) pills, and 10.10g of ketamine in his bag and rented room.
Police have stated that that the Thai partner in the shop has a permit to sell cannabis, but Daniel had allegedly been selling illegal narcotics as well for about six months.
Immigration police commander Pol Col Surachai Iampueng said that the suspect had entered Thailand on a tourist visa and had travelled in and out of the country several times.
It is possible that the suspect has smuggled cannabis from Thailand to clients in other countries.
Daniel will be charged with possession of controlled substances with intent to sell and, if convicted, he will be deported and blacklisted for 10 years after serving a jail term.
