Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul visited flood-hit areas in Hat Yai District of Songkhla Province this evening and ordered local authorities and relief units to provide urgent assistance to people affected.
Anutin, who is accompanied by his spouse Thananon Niramit, braved falling rain to personally hand out relief packages to the flood victims who are having difficulties getting supplies.
He also stopped to chat with members of communities whose residences are under water.
Anutin held a meeting with local authorities to assess the situation during which he instructed them to make sure that people affected by floods are provided for.
Anutin said he was informed that the water level should return to normal within a few days.
Songkhla Governor Ratthasart Chidchu said there is a shortage of boats needed for transporting flood victims out of heavily-affected areas.
The governor said more than 80,000 people in Hat Yai, a major commercial centre of southern Thailand, are being affected by the flash floods.
He also said that hundreds of tourists, including visitors from Malaysia, are being stranded in hotels and need urgent help.
