Thailand's Narcotics Control Board has appointed officials as minister counsellors on drug control, attached to embassies in five countries- Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar, and China - to strengthen anti-drug cooperation.
Government spokesman Jirayu Houngsub said adding these positions to Thai embassies demonstrates Thailand’s commitment to combating drug trafficking.
At Asean summits in Vientiane earlier this month, leaders, including Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, agreed to jointly address narcotics issues in the region, Jirayu said.
Jirayu added that Paetongtarn will travel tomorrow to the northeastern province of Roi Et to follow up on anti-drug initiatives there, including the rehabilitation of former addicts.
The premier will host a meeting at Kewatung Temple in Thawat Buri district to discuss the “Roi Et Model,” which is intended to serve as a model for other provinces in tackling drug problems.
