A rescue team has been racing against time to help three workers, one Chinese and two Myanmar nationals, trapped inside a collapsed train tunnel, under construction in Pak Chong district of Nakhon Ratchasima province, after they detected signs of life.
A device, specifically designed to detect buried casualties, was deployed yesterday after the ceiling of the Thai-Chinese high-speed train project tunnel, in Khlong Khananchit, Chanthuek sub-district, collapsed.
The device detected the vital signs of the three trapped workers at about 2.30am this morning.
This morning, the rescue team from the Department of Public Disaster Prevention and Mitigation consulted engineers in charge of building the tunnel to work out plan to rescue those trapped.
The department’s team is reported to be specialised in searching for and rescuing victims trapped under collapsed buildings and this is their first mission involving a collapsed tunnel.
The engineers believe that the three are trapped about 45 metres from the location of the collapse.
An air vent has been inserted through the rubble into the area where the vital signs were located, before a larger pipe is installed, through which those trapped can be extracted.
