People’s party MP, Sirilapas Kongtrakarn, has criticised a female news personality for making fun of her depression during a livestream of the prime ministerial vote last Friday.
Sirilapas posted on Facebook yesterday, sharing a snippet of the livestream in question, along with a statement which reads “Yes, I am suffering from depression and I’m receiving medical treatment.”
The livestream shows the female news personality, ‘Khampaka’, making fun of Sirilapas’s mental health, while the MP was about to vote on Friday.
Khampaka was heard calling her inappropriate names and saying “I hope to see you crying in parliament again and again”. Two other news personalities on the same livestream were seen giggling in reaction.
The video attracted 1.7 million views and over 2,500 comments, mostly criticising the news personalities’ actions.
The People’s party MP criticised the anchor for her lack of manners and stated that “The Pheu Thai party and the former prime minister, who Khampaka had praised, previously passed a cabinet resolution to add mental health awareness to the national agenda.”
Sirilapas also added that people have been trying to advocate for an end to the stigmatisation of people with mental health issues, as well for improvements in mental health services.
“It’s so funny how the news personality is this old and still acts this way towards others. If you have time, take some to analyse your own mental health,” she said in her post.
Her boyfriend also posted on TikTok, condemning the actions, saying that making fun of someone’s mental health is inappropriate and adding, “If you can’t be a professional media personality, then at least be someone who does not laugh at other people’s suffering”.
Over 8% of Thais experienced high levels of stress between 2020 and 2024, according to Thailand’s Mental Health Department, nearly 10% were at risk of depression and more than 5% faced the risk of self-harming.
