The Department of Livestock Development has deployed 50 officers equipped with heavy machinery to assist a flood-ravaged pig farm in Muang district of Prachin Buri province, where more than 2,000 pigs drowned in severe floods.
Dr. Chaiwat Yothakol, director-general of the Department of Livestock Development, revealed yesterday that the urgent operation followed orders from the Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives to mitigate the impact of the disaster on local livestock farmers.
The Prachin Buri Provincial Livestock Office and the Bureau of Quarantine and Inspection’s Special Task Force (Group 2) have deployed four six-wheel trucks, a power loader to hoist carcasses onto transport vehicles, a flat-bottom boat, and an excavator.
The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) also provided a six-wheel truck and two additional officers.
Teams were dispatched to the farm in Wang Boriboon subdistrict to collect the dead pigs and transport them to high, unflooded ground in Nontri subdistrict of Kabin Buri district for disposal.
Officers are also expediting the evacuation of surviving pigs from the inundated farm.
Dr. Chaiwat assured that all carcasses will be buried and sanitised using proper veterinary biosecurity standards to prevent disease outbreaks.
