The Thai Foreign Ministry has not been informed that Myanmar’s ambassador to Thailand was summoned back to Naypyitaw for questioning in connection with alleged collusion with Myanmar businessmen and the issuance of passports to anti-regime figures.
An informed source in the ministry told Thai PBS World that the reported recall was an internal matter for the Myanmar government.
The source was responding to a report by the Chiang Mai-based Irrawaddy news outlet that Zaw Zaw Soe had recently been summoned back for interrogation, following the August visit to Thailand by Myanmar’s President Min Aung Hlaing.
According to sources from Myanmar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the ambassador was questioned over allegations that he colluded with certain Thai-based Myanmar businessmen to transport workers into Thailand via the Kawthaung route and issued passports to people opposed to the military regime.
A source close to the Myanmar Embassy in Thailand confirmed the reports, according to Irrawaddy.
The ambassador was summoned just five days after he met with Thailand’s labour minister to discuss the collection of data on Myanmar migrant workers in Thailand and the establishment of official remittance channels for overseas workers.
