General Prawit Wongsuwan was re-elected leader of the opposition Palang Pracharath party after he had resigned ahead of the party’s special general meeting today to elect the new executive committee, following the resignation of the party’s secretary-general, Thammanat Prompao and his followers.
Thammanat and several other executive committee members quit their party posts after they decided to submit a separate list of prospective ministers to Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra.
Today, General Prawit chaired a special general meeting of the party’s executive committee and several hundred party members to elect the new leader, the new secretary-general and executive committee members.
The meeting re-elected General Prawit as the leader and elected 23 other executive committee members, said Paibul Nititawan who was elected the new secretary-general.
Eight deputy leaders was elected. They are Santi Promphat, Chaiwut Thanakamanusorn, Treenuch Thienthong, Uttama Savanayana, Sontirat Sontijirawong, Chakart Pattanakitvibul, Chaimongkol Chairob and Apichai Taechaubol.
After his re-election as the party leader, General Prawit vowed that the party will be united and will not split again.
He said that party has changed its administrative structure by assigning its eight deputy leaders to oversee all constituencies, instead of the secretary-general, who will, from now on, assume the role of supporting the deputy leaders.
When asked how the party will deal with Thammanat, he retorted, “It is Thammanat’s matter, you go and ask him.”
The rift in the party flared up over the sharing of the Palang Pracharath party’s quota of four cabinet seats, after General Prawit’s faction proposed its own list to the Pheu Thai party.
