The Institute of Pathology of the Department of Medical Sciences issued a statement today accepting that it made a mistake in the delivery of the wrong body of a deceased infant for cremation and offering an apology to the parents.
In the statement, the institute said that it received the remains of two infants from the Queen Sirikit National Institute of Child Health on January 15th.
Both were boys, one aged four months and a day and the other aged two months and a day.
It said that the first infant had mistakenly been handed to the wrong parents for cremation, after which the real parents were informed of the mistake, adding that the error occurred because of the infant’s being of the same gender and similar age.
The institute also said that it has set up a fact-finding committee to investigate and to report to the executives of the department as to how a repeat of such a mistake can be prevented.
