The Public Health Ministry has clarified that Thai-born global icon Lalisa “Lisa” Manobal did not violate Thailand's alcohol control laws during her recent appearance on an American late-night show, as the incident occurred abroad and lacked commercial intent.
Public Health Minister Pattana Promphat addressed the ongoing debate yesterday after Lisa was seen enjoying a Thai beer brand on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’ in the United States.
Pattana explained that legal enforcement relies heavily on circumstance and intent. The event took place overseas and was not directly broadcast in Thailand, so officials view it as a personal action rather than a product promotion.
"Thai law does not ban drinking alcohol, it regulates advertising," Pattana stressed. He added that domestic media rebroadcasting or sharing clips of the segment remain compliant with local regulations as long as product names and brand logos are blurred.
Addressing content creators who have replicated Lisa's cocktail recipe online, the minister warned that cases will be evaluated individually.
While recreating the drink without showing brand names is permissible, displaying clear logos or attaching commercial links, such as online shopping carts, could be considered illegal promotion for trade purposes.
Pattana noted that there are no immediate plans to amend existing alcohol control legislation, stating that any future revisions would require a careful assessment of the pros and cons.
The minister urged the public not to blow the incident out of proportion, noting that it gained widespread attention in Thailand simply because it involved a celebrated Thai artist performing on a foreign television program.
