Two suspected drug traffickers were arrested by police after a car chase and shootout in Bangkok’s Sai Mai district late last night. A third suspect is still on the run.
150,000 methamphetamine tablets and 1kg of crystal meth (ice) were found in the trunk of the abandoned car.
The incident took place at about 10.30pm last night, when police manning a road block pulled a suspicious-looking car over for a search, but the driver refused to stop, prompting some of the officers to give chase on motorcycles.
During the pursuit, one of the suspects opened fire from the car, prompting the police to return fire. No police officers were injured.
The car chase ended when the driver crashed into the wall of a house in Sai Mai Soi 10. The suspects abandoned the vehicle and hid in one of the houses.
More police arrived at the scene, to block any exit from the lane. Police then used a loud hailer to ask the suspects to surrender.
Over an hour later, police stormed the house and arrested two suspects, including a woman and the injured driver. A third suspect, who is believed to have been the gunman, fled the scene.
Police said that more than ten cars parked in Sai Mai Sois 10 and 5 sustained damage after they were hit by the suspects’ vehicle during the chase.
