China’s Assistant Minister for Public Security, Liu Zhongyi, and his delegation are in Myawaddy township of Myanmar this afternoon, for talks with the country’s interior ministry about the repatriation via Thailand of about 500 Chinese nationals working in scam call centres.
Liu and his 25 staff arrived at Don Mueang airport, this morning, before boarding a Nok Air flight to Mae Sot district of Tak province. They then crossed the border into Myawaddy to meet Myanmar’s interior minister, according to informed sources.
The sources said that the Chinese delegation also visited Shwe Kokko, an area notorious for housing Chinese-run scam call centres, adding that the agenda for the meeting between the two ministers will include the repatriation of the first group of about 500 Chinese nationals, who have expressed their wishes to return to China.
The sources also said that a chartered flight will be arranged to fly them back to their country via the airport in Mae Sot district.
Coincidentally, it is reported that People’s party MP Rangsiman Rome is also in Mae Sot district today, in his capacity as head of the House committee on national security, border activities and national strategy.
It is not known whether Rangsiman will meet with Liu.
Liu was in Thailand about two weeks ago, to demand that Thailand take decisive action to deal with the online scam networks in Myanmar, noting that their operations post a serious threat to China and Thailand.
He also proposed that Thailand cut electricity, fuel and internet supplies to Myanmar border townships, to disrupt the operations of the scam networks, which Thailand did on February 5th.
