Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul described US President Donald Trump as responsive and attentive during their brief discussions on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in South Korea.
The leaders met after a reception dinner hosted by South Korean President Lee Jae Myung in Gyeongju on October 29 to honor President Trump.
Leaders from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Singapore, and Vietnam were also in attendance.
Anutin said that immediately after the dinner, he held a brief personal discussion with Trump near the dinner table, seeking ways for the US president to help secure more favorable conditions for Thailand, noting the country’s long-standing friendly ties with the United States.
Trump assured Anutin that he would inform the US trade representative to explore the matter further.
This marked the second time Anutin said he raised the issue with Trump, the first being during the ASEAN Summit in Malaysia, followed by the discussion at the APEC meeting.
Asked to describe the conversation, Anutin said Trump was attentive and responsive to his requests. “The US president returned to continue the discussion with me even after greeting other world leaders,” Anutin said.
The Thai premier also expressed gratitude to Trump for supporting the recent signing of a joint declaration between Thailand and Cambodia in Kuala Lumpur, aimed at easing ongoing tensions along the shared border.
“Cambodia has fulfilled its commitments under the agreement, and Thailand has prepared its measures accordingly. Both sides aim to implement the agreement as soon as possible,” Anutin said.
During the dinner reception, each leader delivered a brief speech. Anutin said he highlighted Thailand’s commitment to regional cooperation, including ASEAN initiatives, Mekong subregional frameworks, and the RCEP agreement.
He also expressed appreciation for US support in promoting peace and stability in the region, particularly the facilitation of the Thailand-Cambodia peace process.
“The US backing demonstrates its commitment to peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region. Thailand hopes this constructive engagement will pave the way for balanced trade negotiations that benefit both Thai and American citizens,” Anutin said.
The meeting between Anutin and Trump was described as cordial and friendly, with the two leaders exchanging handshakes and warm gestures during the dinner.
