The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) has accepted Thailand’s resolution on transnational crimes and scams for discussion as matter on its emergency agenda.
A Thai parliamentary delegation, led by Parliament President Wan Muhamad Noor Matha, is currently attending the 151st session of the IPU in Geneva, Switzerland.
According to the delegation, two resolutions were adopted by the IPU. The first is Thailand’s resolution on transnational crimes and scams, which was added by 850:200 votes. The second resolution calls for the IPU’s demonstration of solidarity regarding the situation in Madagascar.
Cambodia did not vote in support of the Thai resolution, although the chief of its delegation spent more time than permitted criticising alleged Thai provocations over Thai-Cambodian border conflict, such as the use of loudspeakers to blast loud noises towards Cambodian citizens living near the border.
In presenting the Thai resolution, People party MP Rangsiman Rome told the meeting that the resolution covers organised crime, cybercrime, financial fraud and romance scams, among others.
Rangsiman noted that scam operations are flourishing in Southeast Asia, with hundreds of thousands of innocent people being deceived out of their money, while many other people are being deceived and forced to work for scam call centres.
