Captivated by cascades: Thailand’s most magnificent waterfalls

The rainy season transforms the Thai countryside into a vivid, living landscape. Forests spring to life, fields sway in different shades of green, and rivers swell into roaring and majestic cascades.

For outdoor enthusiasts, this is the time to wonder at waterfalls.

Exploring these waterfalls is more than sightseeing; it’s a journey into landscapes at their most alive.

Jungle paths drip with rain, cascades roar at full force, and secluded corners of the country reveal themselves only to those willing to wander.

Whether it’s a family swim in emerald lagoons, a silver spray of water as if lit by moonlight, or the raw power of a torrent plunging into a seemingly bottomless valley, these seven waterfalls capture nature’s ability to astonish and inspire.

From jungle-shrouded giants to mystical hidden gems, these waterfalls showcase the best of Thailand in the green season.

Thi Lo Su Waterfall, Tak

Tucked away within Umphang Wildlife Sanctuary in Tak Province, Thi Lo Su is one of Southeast Asia’s largest waterfalls.

Here, in the heart of the rainforest, the Klo Tho stream dives dramatically—250 meters down—before spilling across half a kilometer of limestone cliffs.

It’s absolutely compelling. From June to November, the roar is deafening, covering the forest in a fine mist that feels otherworldly. Reaching Thi Lo Su in the rainy season is an adventure in itself.

Visitors raft the wild Mae Klong River and trek through evergreen forest, while the dry months (December–May) make the trip easier by vehicle.

Negotiating the nature trail, with bamboo groves, wild bananas and fields of wild Siam tulips leads to the breathtaking sight.

The panoramic view over the landscape and cascades evokes a primeval world seemingly untouched by time.

Erawan Waterfall, Kanchanaburi

Sweeping over seven tiers across 1.5 kilometers of evergreen forest in Kanchanaburi Province, Erawan Waterfall rises from 100 to 400 meters above sea level.

Each tier has its own personality—from tranquil pools to dramatic cliffs—but the seventh tier, shaped like the three-headed Erawan Elephant of Hindu mythology, gives the falls their name.

Limestone formations create emerald lagoons ideal for outdoor swimming.

On clear days, shafts of sunlight slip through the canopy, turning the water into shimmering jewels.

The lower tiers welcome families and picnickers, while those venturing higher find serenity and solitude.

Trails link each tier, and the three-hour round trip offers a rewarding climb through an evergreen forest.

Tham Phra Waterfall, Bueng Kan

Tucked inside Phu Wua Wildlife Sanctuary, Tham Phra has the feel of a well-kept secret in the ancient woodland.

Getting there is part of the adventure too. Visitors take a short boat ride across the Sok River, then continue on foot along a forest trail before the falls suddenly appear.

Out there, in the tranquil and timeless setting, the cascade spills over broad sandstone cliffs in three tiers, each with its own unmistakable character.

At its base, smooth rock ledges create natural slides into cool pools, perfect for a dip.

At the second tier, a cliffside carving of Buddha looks serenely over the water, blending spirituality with the woodland and waterway.

From the summit, sweeping jungle views stretch to the horizon – especially impressive in the rainy season, when the waterfall is at its most powerful and beautiful.

Serene and spiritual, Tham Phra waterfall is one of Bueng Kan’s most captivating natural escapes.

Saeng Chan Waterfall, Ubon Ratchathani

Tucked inside Pha Taem National Park, Saeng Chan is one of Thailand’s lesser-known cascades.

The park itself is noted for its prehistoric cliff paintings, sweeping Mekong views, and seasonal wildflower fields, and this waterfall makes the park even more compelling.

Water plunges through a rounded hole in the sandstone cliff, dropping into a shaded lagoon below.

Saeng Chan, the ‘Moonlight Waterfall,’ lives up to its name as silvery spray spills through rock and shimmers like a moonbeam. Photo://Courtesy TAT

Its name, Saeng Chan (“moonlight” in Thai), comes from the silvery spray that resembles a moonbeam.

The best time to visit is from July to January, when the falls are at their strongest and the spray fans out in a heart-shaped pattern across the pool, creating a magical, photogenic scene.

Haew Narok Waterfall, Nakhon Ratchasima

In Khao Yai National Park, Haew Narok—“Abyss of Hell”—lives up to its name. The three-tiered fall plunges over 150 meters into a rugged gorge, its thunderous roar echoing through the forest.

During the rainy season, mist rises to the canopy, rainbows arch over the torrent, and the sheer scale is awe-inspiring.

The journey enhances the experience. A forest trail winds through one of Thailand’s UNESCO World Heritage sites, home to hornbills, gibbons, and wild elephants.

From the viewing platform, the falls are exhilarating and humbling: an encounter with nature at its rawest and most magnificent.

Krung Ching Waterfall, Nakhon Si Thammarat

Deep in Khao Luang National Park, southern Thailand’s Krung Ching Waterfall is a seven-tiered wonder.

Each cascade has its own pool and character, but it’s the second—nicknamed “Pliew”—that captures the imagination.

Water crashes over a sheer cliff, sending mist into sunlit rainbows. The 3.7-kilometer trail through pristine rainforest is alive with birdsong, butterflies, and occasional langurs.

For eco-travelers and photographers, it’s as rewarding as the waterfall itself. Krung Ching is a reminder of southern Thailand’s lush biodiversity, particularly vivid in the green season.

Khlong Lan Waterfall, Kamphaeng Phet

Nestled in the forests of Kamphaeng Phet, Khlong Lan is one of Thailand’s most majestic yet underappreciated waterfalls.

Part of Khlong Lan National Park, it plunges 100 meters from a cliff into a wide basin, sending torrents roaring over the edge.

During the rainy season, its power and spray are at their peak. Unlike many of Thailand’s grand cascades, Khlong Lan is easily accessible—a short walk from the parking area.

Easily reached yet gloriously wild, Khlong Lan pairs jungle drama with the simple pleasure of swimming beneath a grand cascade. Photo://Courtesy Khlong Lan National Park

The large pool at the base invites swimming, cooling off, or simply soaking in the spectacle. Surrounded by dense evergreen jungle, it is a perfect blend of drama, beauty, and convenience.
