Cambodian troops are continuing to dig trenches near the Thai border, but there are no indications they are preparing for a third round of fighting with Thailand, Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said yesterday.
He made the remarks after a visit to Sa Kaeo province yesterday, where he was briefed on the latest developments along the Thai-Cambodian border by the Burapha Task Force, which oversees security in the eastern provinces.
Anutin said the trench digging is a tactical move by Cambodian forces and poses no immediate threat to Thailand, adding that there are no signs of renewed hostilities.
He noted, however, that Thai troops have not lowered their guard and remain on alert to deal with any border incursions, adding that the current situation does not warrant any emergency meetings.
On mine clearance along the shared border, Anutin said the peace agreement requires both countries to cooperate in demining operations for humanitarian reasons.
He added that Thailand will proceed with demining unilaterally if mines are found on Thai territory.
