Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has explained that he did not propose that Thailand and Cambodia enter into a ceasefire from 10pm on Saturday night.
Today, Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul reposted a message sent to him yesterday by Anwar, stating that he did not mention a ceasefire but merely suggested a cessation of any provocations from 10pm.
“I didn’t say that both parties have agreed,” Anwar wrote.
Anutin added that this clearly proves there was no plan or agreement by the Thai government to enter into a ceasefire as of 10pm last night.
He also said that his government remains determined to preserve, protect and defend Thailand’s integrity and the Thai people at all costs.
The Thai Foreign Ministry also sent a note to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees today, protesting against Cambodian shelling of Thai civilian targets and its prevention of Thai citizens from returning home from Cambodia.
Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow also briefed the visiting Vietnamese foreign minister on the situation with Cambodia and its consequences for Thai people living along the border.
He told his Vietnamese counterpart that Thailand has acted only in self-defence against Cambodia.
