The Thai Defence Ministry’s spokesperson condemned Cambodia today for firing BM-21 rockets onto Thai communities and markets in Sa Kaeo’s Aranyaprathet district, prompting an immediate evacuation.
Rear Admiral Surasant Kongsiri said the attack demonstrated the cruelty of the Cambodian side by deliberately targeting densely populated civilian areas.
Earlier reports said several BM-21 rockets landed near the Rongkluea Border Market, a major commercial hub well known for selling goods imported from Cambodia and China. The incident sparked panic among residents, traders and shoppers in the area.
The First Army Region ordered an urgent evacuation on Sunday afternoon, after at least 10 loud explosions, believed to be rocket or artillery fire, were heard in and around the market area.
The First Army Region has issued a public warning to residents in Sa Kaeo province, stating that Burapha Task Force units were conducting military operations against Cambodian military targets across the border, opposite Ta Phraya, Khok Sung, Aranyaprathet and Khlong Hat districts.
The residents in the districts were advised not to return to their homes and to remain at official evacuation centres until the situation stabilises, while closely following official announcements.
Witnesses said the blasts were louder and closer than previous incidents since border clashes began.
A trader in the area said six consecutive explosions were heard initially, followed by several more, forcing vendors to shut their stalls and rapidly move out of the area.
Free transport to shelters was arranged for those without private vehicles, with pickup points established at Siammin Plaza in Aranyaprathet.
