At least 40 incidents were reported in Narathiwat province last night, leaving three people injured and causing damage to government buildings, utility and telecommunications infrastructure, businesses, vehicles and roads.
The Narathiwat Centre for Assistance and Rehabilitation reported on Sunday that the incidents occurred across all 13 districts of the province on Saturday night. They mainly involved explosions, arson, the burning of vehicle tyres and gunfire, according to the centre.
Chanae district recorded the highest number, with nine incidents, including the burning of tyres near a mosque and a school, as well as arson attacks on an old village security post and the Chang Phueak Sub-District Administrative Organisation office.
One person was injured when gunmen opened fire on members of the public behind Phithak Wittaya Kumung School in Chanae district.
Rangae district recorded eight incidents, including explosions and gunfire near a child development centre and a telecommunications tower, the burning of a sub-district administrative organisation office and a backhoe, and the burning of tyres and vehicles.
The perpetrators also seized a black four-door Mitsubishi Triton pickup truck belonging to the Bang Or Sub-District Administrative Organisation before fleeing the area.
The other incidents were reported in Sungai Kolok, Bacho, Muang Narathiwat, Tak Bai, Cho Airong, Si Sakhon, Yi-ngo, Waeng, Sungai Padi, Sukhirin and Rueso districts.
Three people were injured in total, one in Chanae district and two in Muang Narathiwat district. All three are being treated in hospitals.
The Narathiwat governor has ordered officials to provide assistance and compensation to residents and others affected by the incidents as soon as possible.
