Four explosive devices, thought to have been planted by insurgents, detonated early this morning in Mueang district of the southernmost province of Narathiwat. No injuries have been reported.
At about 11pm, police were alerted by residents to the presence of suspicious-looking objects placed on a road island on Highway 4136 in Mueang district. Police and local officials rushed to the scene and cordoned off a section of the road.
Instead of immediately approaching the objects, the police decided to wait until sunrise out of an abundance of caution. At about 4.30am, the first device detonated, followed by the second and a third, each about five minutes apart. The fourth device detonated about 10 minutes after the third.
The previous day, in Songkhla and Yala provinces, insurgents launched arson and grenade attacks, wounding three Burmese nationals at the construction site of a Chinese goddess statue in Thepa district of Songkhla.
The arson attacks were aimed at utility poles and surveillance cameras in Yala province.
