The government maintains full legal authority to safeguard national security, despite the dissolution of the House of Representatives yesterday, ACM Prapas Sornchaidee, director of the Joint Press Centre for the Thailand–Cambodia Border Situation, said today.
The border situation remains tense, following what Prapas described as Cambodian encroachment and gunfire in several areas along the frontier.
He emphasised that the caretaker government and the armed forces retain full legal power to issue orders and conduct operations, adding that martial law in the border areas remains in effect under Thai security laws.
“The Thai military is therefore compelled to exercise the country’s right to self-defense under both Thai and international law, with the sole objectives of ending the threat, protecting lives, and preserving national sovereignty,” he said during a press briefing.
The Joint Press Centre, he said, will continue to provide transparent updates to ensure the public has access to accurate information.
While reiterating Thailand’s commitment to peaceful dispute resolution and its desire to maintain peaceful relations with Cambodia, Prapas stressed that Thailand will “resolutely and lawfully defend the country” to ensure the safety and security of its people.
The Joint Press Centre urged the public to follow updates only from official government sources, avoid high-risk areas, and refrain from sharing images or information that could compromise the safety of officials. Citizens were also encouraged to remain calm and maintain unity during this period.
Prapas said Thailand will overcome the situation through the cooperation, confidence, and unity of its people, and noted that the centre will continue to report developments regularly.
