Pheu Thai-backed candidate Sarawut Phetphanomporn won the Udon Thani Provincial Administrative Organisation (PAO) mayoral election, while Bhumjaithai’s ally, Warin Chinwong, won in Nakhon Si Thammarat.
According to unofficial poll results, Sarawut received 261,148 votes, beating People party-backed Kanisorn Khurirang’s 208,032. New Direction party’s Danut Tantoedthit received 12,599 votes.
Last night, former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra congratulated Sarawut on his victory in Udon Thani, which is a ‘red-shirt’ stronghold.
He assured people in the north-eastern province that Sarawut’s tenure as mayor will not be a disappointment and that he will do his very best for the people. Otherwise, Thaksin said he would personally take action.
Thaksin spent two days this month campaigning for Sarawut.
In Phetchaburi province, Chaiya Angkinan, the former PAO mayor, was re-elected with 146,179 votes, beating Kris Kaewyoo, a former MP, who received 50,091.
In Nakhon Si Thammarat, Warin, a member of the Nakhon Khemkheng group, which is supported by the Bhumjaithai party, won with 320,067 votes.
The losing candidates were Kanokporn Dejdecho (287,093), Sanhapote Suksrimuang (31,384) and Aryasit Srisuwan (3,564).
Meanwhile, independent candidate and former PAO chief, Chaiya Angkinan, was re-elected in Phetchaburi.
