Thanyaporn Mungcharoenporn won the Surin Provincial Administrative Organisation (PAO) mayoral election on Saturday with 222,724 votes.
The runner-up was Pornchai Mungcharoenporn (211,625), followed by Natthamon Siriwattanavanich (81,605), Chalong Sattarattanamai (15,504) and Patarapon Hongsoong (4,509), according to unofficial poll results.
There are 1,083,351 eligible voters in the province, 573,454 (52.93%) of whom cast their ballots. 20,628 of those were invalid and 16,859 did not vote for any of the five candidates.
Tanyaporn is closely affiliated with the Bhumjaithai party. Her husband, Pakorn, is a party MP.
She told a Thai PBS reporter in Surin today that her priorities are the provision of clean water for consumption, healthcare for the elderly, higher ex-farm prices for rice and cattle, village development and promotion of the famous Surin silk.
She explained that she has no conflict with Pornchai, the former PAO chief, but they do have different working styles.
