Same-sex couples can register marriages at all district offices throughout the country from January 23rd, when the Marriage Equality Act comes into force.
Traisuree Traisoranakul, spokesperson for the Ministry of Interior, said today that Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul had ordered the Provincial Administration Department to prepare to provide assistance to same-sex couples who want to register.
Under the Marriage Equality Act, to register, same-sex couples must be at least 18-year-old. In case of a minor, he or she must be accompanied by their parents, who must give their consent, and there must be permission from a court.
The couples must not have a common parent and or be married to another person. A step parent cannot marry their step son or daughter. If a female partner was already married and her husband is deceased, or their marriage has been legally ended, she can re-marry 310 days from the end of the previous marriage, with an exception where there is permission from a court, she delivers a baby during that period or there is a doctor’s certificate that she is not pregnant.
Same-sex couples must bring their ID cards, or equivalent document issued by a government agency, and their household registration documents with them. In case of foreign couples, they must show their passports and letters from their embassies confirming their statuses.
The marriage registration fee is 200 baht.
