Park rangers have launched a manhunt for two poachers, who allegedly killed a guar in Thung Yai Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary in Umphang district of Tak province.
Mongkol Chaipakdee, director of the Natural Resources Conservation Area 14, based in Tak province, said today that a park ranger unit was dispatched to Mae Lamung sub-district on Friday, after it had been reported that two known poachers had ventured into the sanctuary.
Split into two teams, the rangers scoured the wooded area until about 10.49am today. Then, two shots rang out. They rushed in the direction from which the sound of the gunshots came.
They found make-shift camp and saw two men, believed to be the poachers, in the act of chopping wood to prepare a fire. Then they moved in to make the arrest. The two men fled upon seeing the approaching rangers.
Three shotguns, supplies and a slaughtered guar were found abandoned at the camp site.
Mongkol said the rangers did not give chase immediately, but they collected all the evidence at the camp site and took it to the police station in Umphang district for the filing of a complaint.
