The Meteorological Department is advising people in northern and north-eastern regions to prepare for heavy to very heavy rainfall and strong winds this weekend, as the Nagi super typhoon is forecast to make landfall in northern Vietnam on Saturday.
Nagi is packing wind speeds of up to 195kph near its centre, which was located in the South China Sea, about 170km from Hainan Island, at 4am this morning. It is currently moving west, towards Hong Kong and then Vietnam at a speed of about 20kph.
After hitting northern Vietnam on Saturday, Nagi is forecast to weaken considerably and this will bring heavy to very heavy rain and strong winds to Thailand’s northern and north-eastern provinces on Saturday, according to the Weatherman.
Meanwhile, the southwestern monsoon looming over the Andaman Sea and the Gulf is strengthening and this will cause heavy rainfall along the western coast of the southern region and in some eastern provinces. People living at the bases of mountains or close to watercourses are advised to brace for flash flood and overflows.
Rough seas are anticipated in the Andaman Sea and the northern part of the Gulf, with waves up to 3 metres high and over 3 metres in stormy areas. Sailors are advised to exercise great caution and avoid stormy areas, or to stay ashore until Sunday.
