Soft Power, Hard Work, and the Two Girls Carrying the Torch

Soft Power, Hard Work, and the Two Girls Carrying the Torch

Lisa and Nene Royal embody the power of so-called ‘Organic Soft Power’. That sounds great but what exactly is “soft power” and what does it entail?

If you ask the suits in government, it means three-day strategy retreats, endless PowerPoint decks, and committees debating how to sell Thailand. Big shots put on elephant pants, pose for the press, allocate massive budgets, and pat themselves on the back before anything actually happens.

Meanwhile, Lisa and Nene Royal just walk into a room, breathe, do what they love, and “accidentally” conquer half the world.

Soft Power, Hard Work, and the Two Girls Carrying the Torch

Look at how it actually plays out. Government ministries host endless seminars trying to package “Thai-ness”. Lisa (Lalisa Manobal), on the other hand, shows rather than tells. In her latest "SaWaDiKa" music video, there is no loud political grandstanding about soft power—yet, true to her label LLOUD, the Thainess rings out crystal clear in every artfully shot frame. From Thailand’s first international contemporary art museum, Dib Bangkok, to custom Muay Thai shorts and stadium sets, she weaves culture seamlessly into global pop.

This is nothing new for her. When Lisa casually mentioned missing look chin buriram—the standing meatball stall near her hometown station—vendors sold out within twelve hours, news crews descended, and thousands of fans flocked to the tracks for a taste. When she wore a traditional woven sarong on a weekend trip to Ayutthaya, fashion lovers worldwide crashed local artisan websites trying to buy the exact same fabric.

No official campaign. No public budget. Just pure, magnetic influence.

Soft Power, Hard Work, and the Two Girls Carrying the Torch

Then look at Nene Royal on the international stage. She steps onto massive foreign talent shows, hits a terrifyingly high vocal note, and follows it up with the most natural, humble wai you have ever seen. She does not do it because a handbook told her to represent the nation. She does it because that instinctive warmth and respect are coded into who she is. On “America’s Got Talent”, she paired a fierce rock performance with a piece of Thai textile on her costume, earning a Golden Buzzer while remaining, at heart, just a sweet girl from Phuket.

When Nene’s performances went viral, fans and music critics dug into her archives. They discovered her roots busking at the Naka Night Market with her old band, Ozone. Without a government dime spent, global audiences got a glimpse into Thailand’s vibrant local music scene through her journey.

Where glossy brochures and costly advertising campaigns fail, the girls succeed effortlessly. A single Instagram story or live stream inspires millions to explore what Thailand has to offer. An instinctive Sawasdee on a global stage hits deeper than any promotional poster. They win through sheer talent, grit, and the genuine charm our culture has quietly cultivated for generations.

And what happens after these two girls do all the heavy lifting?

The moment "SaWaDiKa" trends online with millions of views, or Nene’s audition goes viral from California to Beijing, the big shots rush to the microphones. "Ah yes, this aligns perfectly with our National Soft Power Framework!" They smile for the cameras and smoothly attempt to claim credit for a victory they had zero hand in creating.

Real soft power is not built in a conference room. It lives in small, unscripted moments: the genuine smile, the polite bow, the quiet humility under blinding stage lights, and the absolute refusal to forget where you came from.

While the men in suits are still drafting their next policy paper, Lisa and Nene have already swept the globe—one song, one fiery rock performance, and one wai at a time.
