Two workers, from the city administration’s public disaster prevention and mitigation office, narrowly escaped injury when they lowered themselves on ropes to the bottom of the 50-metre sinkhole, which appeared on Samsen Road this morning, in their attempt to retrieve a car.
Officials at the scene said the two workers were trying to tie a sling around the car when the soft soil at the bottom suddenly started to slide, prompting them to abandon their salvage attempt and call their colleagues to pull them out of the hole quickly.
Nonetheless, they said that they might try again when the situation improves.
Nitarn Chuenchanokphibul, a volunteer from the Ruam Katanyu Foundation, said that they found a white sedan abandoned at the edge of the sinkhole, but still could not locate the pickup truck from the Samsen police station, which went missing.
He said the police truck might have fallen deeper into the sinkhole and cannot be seen yet.
