New BTS train fares for the first and second Green Line extensions are expected increase in November, when Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt signs an edict, from the current 15 baht flat rate to 17-45 baht, depending on the distance travelled, according to an informed source at the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA).
The first extensions of the BTS Green Line are from On Nut to Baring and from Taksin to Bang Wa. The second extensions are from Baring to Keha in Samut Prakan and from Mor Chit to Saphan Mai and Khu Khot.
Despite the fare increase, the maximum for the entire route will not exceed 65 baht, said the source, adding that the adjustment will generate an additional two billion baht per annum for the city administration, which will make up for the losses generated by the operations and maintenance of the two extensions to date, estimated at about five billion baht a year.
The BMA, through its affiliated investment arm, Krungthep Thanakom, has hired BTS to operate and undertake the maintenance of the two extensions under a concession contract, which is due to expire in 2029.
On October 8, the city council approved an additional expenditure budget of 32 billion baht for the 2026 fiscal year, to settle debt owed to the BTS by the BMA for the operations and maintenance of the extensions, as ordered by the Central Administrative Court.
