Nationwide check on scales ordered to protect consumers and fruit growers

To protect consumers, Thailand’s Internal Trade Department has launched a nationwide check on the accuracy of vendor weighing machines.

Pol Sub-Lt Chakra Yodmanee, deputy director-general of the department, said today (Tuesday) that officials from the department seized 90 substandard sets of scales between June 1st and 24th and fined the vendors for cheating their customers.

He said that the officials will check the scales used by wholesalers, retailers and vendors to weigh fruit, particularly in southern provinces, where durian and mangosteen are now being harvested, as well as longan in northern provinces.

Officials will also check whether fruit vendors are displaying prices, as legally required.

Customers or fruit growers who feel they are being cheated through the use of substandard scales can contact the Internal Trade Department on its hotline number 1569.
