Loud solar panel malfunction in Yala last night, not an insurgent attack

Security forces in Yala have dispelled local security concerns by confirming that a late-night explosion in Muang district was caused by a solar panel equipment failure, rather than an insurgent attack.

The Yala Provincial Public Relations Office reported that residents in Ban Batan, Lidol sub-district, alerted security agencies after hearing a loud blast between 11.00 and 11.50pm last night.

A thorough inspection of the scene, conducted this morning in Moo 4, Ban Batan in Lam Mai sub-district, revealed that the noise was that of exploding solar electricity generating apparatus. Approximately 10 solar panels and related units were severely damaged.

Authorities have confirmed that there is no evidence of an explosive device.

An investigation is under way to determine whether the blast was triggered by an electrical short circuit, an energy storage malfunction, an excessive heat buildup or a combination of all three, in an effort to allay public concern or misconceptions.
