Last suspect in Pathumwan student murder surrenders

The last of nine suspects, wanted on charges related to the murder of a student in front of the Pathumwan Institute of Technology on January 26th, is scheduled to appear at the Bangkok South Criminal Court today.

Identified only as 19-year old “Worakan”, he surrendered to Pathumwan district police on Wednesday. The Facebook page of the Metropolitan Police Bureau posted a blurred mugshot of Worakan, with a caption which simply read “Game Over”.

The remaining eight suspects are already in custody at the Bangkok Remand Prison.

The victim, identified only by his nickname “Nong Ray”, and a classmate were attacked by a group of youths, believed to be former students of the nearby Rajamangala University of Technology, in front of the Pathumwan college last Friday night. During the fight, Nong Ray was stabbed and died after being rushed to Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital.

Pathumwan and Uthenthawai college students have a long history of bitter and violent rivalry, often manifested in street fights and physical assaults, leading to injuries and deaths.

Security on and around the Uthenthawai campus has been intensified since Wednesday night, as a precaution against potential violence as the institute celebrates the 90th anniversary of its founding today.

Two companies of Metropolitan Police crowd control officers have been deployed on and around the college campus to screen alumni and active students for weapons before being allowed onto the campus.

The anniversary celebrations started at 6.30am this morning with alms being presented to 19 monks, followed by a religious ritual to pay respects to the Vishvakarma, the craftsman deity, and the divine deity of the devas in contemporary Hinduism, a symbol of the college.
