Lawyer-activist Arnon Nampa gets another 2 years in prison for lèse majesté

Thai human rights lawyer Arnon Nampa was sentenced today to another two years and 20 days imprisonment, to run consecutively, after being found guilty by the Criminal Court on lèse majesté and other charges, in connection with a Harry Potter-themed rally at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre on August 3rd, 2021.

Thai Lawyers for Human Rights (TLHR) said today that the latest conviction, the third of its kind, has increased Arnon’s combined imprisonment to 10 years and 20 days.

In this case, Arnon was indicted on multiple charges, including defaming the Monarchy, assembly of more than five people in a maximum control area, in violation of the order by communicable disease control officials, and using loudspeakers in public without permission.

The court found him guilty of all the offences and sentenced. He was also fined 100 baht.

The lawyer and activist is currently serving his two previous jail terms at the Bangkok Remand Prison.
