Indonesian police burn 11 hectare marijuana plantation

Indonesian police burned an 11hectare marijuana plantation in Aceh, North Sumatra, on Wednesday (March 8) after it was discovered by local authorities last month.

“Combined with another field in West Aceh the total area is 43 hectares, which produces 190,000 cannabis stems ready for harvest,” Aceh Police Chief Ahmad Haydar told reporters, as marijuana trees were being uprooted and piled for burning.

Indonesia has some of the strictest drug laws in the world and in 2017 President Joko Widodo told law enforcement officers to shoot drug traffickers to deal with a ‘drugs emergency’.

Last year, Indonesia’s Constitutional Court rejected a judicial review of the country’s narcotics law that would have paved the way for legalising marijuana for medicinal use.
