Democrat leader Abhisit Vejjajiva said after his party appeared to emerge as a kingmaker following the general election that he was ready to “provide checks and balances.”

s of 9.20pm on Sunday, the party was hoping to win more than the 25 seats it secured in 2023.
How many more seats it may gain is subject to further counting, which is expected to continue for a few more hours.
Many news sites have reported that the Democrat Party is ready to move into the opposition. However, a closer look at what
Abhisit said suggests he was not clear-cut about the party’s immediate future.
He said that “nobody has approached us for government formation, as it’s too soon to do that. (But) we will stand by our commitment to serve the best interests of the people (by) providing checks and balances.”
“So far, the general picture is as we expected,” Abhisit said. “But the number of party-list votes for us has increased considerably.”
As of 9.20 pm, the Democrats were set to receive 10 party-list seats, compared with three in 2023.
