Thailand’s Board of Investment (BoI) has granted promotional privileges to two major projects, together worth more than 60 billion baht, to build data centres in the eastern province of Chon Buri.
According to Sasikarn Watthanachan, deputy government spokesperson, one of the projects, estimated to cost about 32 billion baht, was proposed by Quartz Computing Company, an affiliate of Alphabet Inc., the parent company of Google. On completion, it will become the Google’s fifth Cloud service centre in Asia.
The other data centre was proposed by the Digitalland Services affiliate of China’s GDS Holdings, which has been providing such services in China and Southeast Asia. The project is estimated to cost about 28 billion baht and is projected to become operational in 2026.
Sasikarn claimed that the government’s proactive “Cloud First Policy” has encouraged the public and private sectors to use Cloud data services, resulting in the expansion of data centres.
The two projects, when completed, will enhance Thailand’s digital infrastructure and open up more business opportunities in various industries.
47 projects have been proposed by investors from the US, Australia, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, India, Japan and Thailand and have applied for promotional privileges this year, with a combined proposed investment of 173 billion baht.
